Museo provinciale

Founded in 1889, with the first materials collected by archaeologists Michele Lacava and Vittorio De Cicco, the Museum had as its first location the Palace of Justice in Piazza Mario Pagano.
After the fire of 1912, which destroyed many collections, it had its new headquarters in the Santa Maria District, in one of the 18 pavilions built for the Psychiatric Hospital, never completed.
On September 9, 1943, it was razed to the ground by German bombings.
Designed, in 1962, by the architect Giovanni De Franciscis, the new museum was inaugurated on May 2, 1980.
In the imposing complex that dominates the ancient district of Santa Maria, archaeological finds from the excavations conducted in Basilicata are exhibited, referring to the period between prehistory and late Roman age, up to the medieval age.
At the foot of the steps, at the entrance that gives onto Via Ciccotti, the reconstruction of the Aragonese aqueduct of Potenza is proposed, while on the ground floor there is part of a funeral stele with a newsstand, with Oscan inscription in Greek characters from Anxia (Anzi).
All the other materials of the Museum are exhibited on two floors, grouped in chronological and topographical sections.
On the ground floor, included in the documentary exhibition “Anti-identity”, it is possible to visit the pre-protohistoric section dedicated to Francesco Ranaldi, which includes the most significant finds from excavations in the area of the Atella basin, from the caves of Latronico and from Oliveto Lucano.
In the internal garden, the exposure of the Lapidarium is significant, with honorary and funerary inscriptions in Latin relating to the Roman Potentia, in the period between the republican and late ancient ages.
On the first floor you can visit the permanent archaeological exhibition which illustrates the chrono-cultural path of the main forms of population of ancient Lucania (Enotri, Greeks, Lucani).
It starts from the eighth century BC. C. and finds ascribable to the Romanization process that occurred in the period between the 4th century BC. C. up to the first imperial age.
