Il Largo dedicato alla Famiglia Isabelli è situato nel centro storico del capoluogo lucano, a ridosso di via S. Luca e a pochi passi dal Museo Archeologico Nazionale “Dinu Adamesteanu” in Via Serrao.
Il Largo deve il suo nome ad un’illustre famiglia potentina. Un componente di essa, Egidio Antonio Gentili, fu Vescovo della Diocesi di Piedimonte d’Alife. Egli era un patrizio romano che, per privilegio pontificio, fu creato vescovo di Alife da Papa Clemente XII nel 1735. Durante i 17 anni in cui fu a capo della diocesi, fece conoscere il suo animo grande e generoso, restaurando in parte l’episcopio, costruendo dalle fondamenta un casamento nelle vicinanze di Alife, luogo detto la Fabbrica, e accrescendo le rendite del seminario.
Mostrò il suo valore nella sagra audizione tenutasi a Roma, durante il concistoro del 13 giugno 1746, sotto il pontificato di Benedetto XIV, per la canonizzazione dei cinque beati, Giuseppe da Leonessa, Fedele da Sigmaringa, Camillo de Lellis, Pietro Regalato e Caterina de Riccis. Morì il 3 di gennaio del 1752.
The Largo dedicated to the Isabelli family is located in the historic center of the Lucanian capital, near Via S. Luca and a few steps from the National Archaeological Museum “Dinu Adamesteanu”.
It owes its name to an illustrious family from Potenza.
One of its members, Egidio Antonio Gentili, was the Bishop of the Diocese of Piedimonte d’ Alife.
During the 17 years in which he was head of the diocese, he made his great and generous soul well-known, partly restoring the episcope, building from the foundations a tenement near Alife, the place called the Factory, and increasing the seminary income.
It showed its value in the audition festival held in Rome, during the consistory of June 13, 1746, under the pontificate of Benedict XIV, for the canonization of the five blessed, Giuseppe da Leonessa, Fedele da Sigmaringa, Camillo de Lellis, Pietro Regalato and Caterina de Riccis. He died on January 3, 1752.
